Coloma Living History Day

Coloma Gold Discovery

May 11, 2013

My family and I love to go on family adventures and lately we’ve been doing a lot of history related trips because that’s what I’m learning about in school. One of my favorite historical adventures was at the Coloma Living History Day at the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park.

On January 24 1848 James W. Marshall was building a sawmill for Captain John Sutter. Marshall used water from the South Fork of the American River. He noticed little flakes of shine in the water and knew it was gold! Marshall tried to keep his gold discovery a secret, but the word of gold spread fast and started the California Gold Rush of 1849! After all the gold was gone, most tired miners headed home, but some took another look at California and liked what they saw! These pioneers came to see that the land produced many resources and California’s great wealth came from the farm land, not the mines!

To see what it was like during the gold rush, we went to one of the Living History Days in Coloma!

First, we explored different jobs. We learned how people cooked, hunted, traded, and made rope. We even got to make our own rope! Making rope is a lot of work. After you wind the rope, you have to take it to the blacksmith’s shop where he burns of all the fuzz off so the rope is usable smooth and usable!

Giant Hershey Bar

GIANT Hershey Bar

December 30, 2012

It’s so heavy and huge! My brother and I both had trouble guessing what our Christmas present was from our Aunt Julie and Uncle Dustin.

As soon as we opened it, me and Carter were in awe. A GIANT HERSHEY BAR! It took us over a month to eat the whole Hershey bar. The solid chocolate was the best thing ever! We had to cut it up and put all the chunks into a giant container and everyday after school, we ate a chunk of it. That was the yummiest present EVER!

Cardboard Palace

Cardboard Kingdom

December 28, 2012

Welcome to my cardboard palace! This 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom, and a large living roomed palace is unlike any other kingdom.

First, we stared out at Ikea getting some shelves and other stuff for our new Lego room. After my mom and dad unpacked the boxes, they tossed the boxes off the top of the stairs. While they put all the cabinets and furniture together, my brother Carter and I got to work.

We stood up the boxes to make the first few walls and figured out that we were definitely going to need A LOT of duct tape. We started with the walls, then the door, and then added separate separate rooms, creating our cardboard palace little by little.

Once the structure was in place, we began adding details like cardboard shelves to put our Christmas candy stashes in! We added cardboard furniture (the bathroom, beds, and windows, etc), and finally, we decorated, put up pictures, and moved in!

Believe it or not, we camped out, slept, and lived in our cardboard palace for more than a week! This was definitely our best fort ever!
